Since November 9th, Fred students have been working on art projects inspired by Native American art. 3rd graders are drawing a ceramic pot and decorating it with Native American patterns. 4th graders are learning about Native American symbols and creating a totem pole out of a paper towel tube. 5th graders are drawing a dream catcher and learning some new colored pencil techniques. Ask your student what they have learned about Native Americans!

So far this year is looking very different! We have small class sizes with students learning all from home or coming to school only 2 days a week. Thankfully, Art Class is not cancelled! The 5th graders are working on drawing self portraits in the style of book illustrator, Karen Barbour. We read "Let's Talk About Race" and learned that everyone is the same underneath, regardless of our differences.
The teachers at Fred are working hard this week and next to get ready for the 2020-2021 school year. Students who will be attending school in the building will enjoy their Art lessons in their homeroom teacher’s classroom. I will be visiting the classrooms to teach Art for the normal 45-minute class. Students who are learning remotely, will access Art lessons through Schoology. Make sure you check the supply list that was provided to make sure your child has the needed supplies for making Art. I am not allowed to have students use the supplies from my classroom, they must all use their own. I’m excited to see what we can create during this Hybrid and Remote learning time!
Mrs. Shupard is back from maternity leave and ready for a great year of art-making! To start the year, 3rd graders will be watching a YouTube Video that instructs us how to draw a genie lamp. The students will be decorating their lamp with patterns of their choice. 4th graders are starting the year with Splatter Art. This fun painting project will be decorated with lettering that will show our theme for the year “Better Together”. 5th graders are working with cutting and gluing construction paper to create an African mask. Artwork will be selected from these projects to be displayed at the high school during Blue Jay Pride Day on October 5. The 4th grade Painting Club will be creating a life size genie for this display. I hope to see everyone at Seaford High School for Blue Jay Pride Day! If you would like to practice drawing the genie lamp at home, click on the YouTube link below: This YouTube channel, Art for Kids Hub, is a great channel to subscribe to for many great how to drawing videos.
4th grade is learning about PRESENTING artwork! They have brainstormed different ways to display their own artwork and have learned about many ways that famous artwork is presented. One of the ways artwork is presented is in a museum. One of the most famous museums in the world is the Louvre in Paris, France. Since we won't be visiting France anytime soon, you can visit the Louvre through a virtual tour! Click on the link below to explore the Ancient Egyptian collection displayed at the Louvre.
5th grade is currently learning sketching techniques and drawing African characters in honor of Black History Month. Click on the button below if you would like to practice drawing Black Panther at home.
5th grade is putting the final touches on their Pace Car designs this week! I will be sending them off to Dover on Thursday. Dover International Speedway will be announcing the winner of the design challenge in April. Classes done with the pace car design challenge have started working on their African Culture project for Black History Month. I’m so excited to see how these turn out!
On Monday, the last two 3rd grade classes finished their dragon project. (Photos coming to Instagram and Twitter soon) Chinese New Year is Friday! Ask your 3rd grader what they learned about this 15 day celebration! The next project for 3rd grade teaches them how to draw a variety of lines and how to blend using paint. 4th grade has been learning about the difference between 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional works of art. They should be bringing their bird sculpture home within the next few weeks. Your 4th grader should be able to explain how they created a 3 dimensional sculpture from a 2 dimensional painting. They should also be able to talk to you about water color paint and display options for their bird sculpture. Follow me on Twitter and/or Instagram for photos and up-to-date info on what is happening in the Art Room @FredArtClass Welcome to 2018! I just wanted to update everyone on what we have been doing in the Art Room and what we have planned for January.
In December, I tried to send home as many of the completed projects as I could before we left for Winter Break. Unfortunately, because of the way the school schedule has been, I still have some classes that are continuing to work on their 2017 projects. If you haven’t seen them yet, keep an eye out for 3rd graders to bring home their Picasso project and ask them about what they learned about the famous artist, Pablo Picasso. 4th graders should have (or will soon) brought home their Starry Night project. Ask them what they learned about the famous artist Vincent vanGogh and the Post Impressionist art style. 5th graders will be bringing home their Pop Art project. Have them tell you what they learned about Pop Art. At some point in January, all classes will be starting their new 2018 projects. 3rd graders will be learning about Chinese New Year and creating a dragon. 4th graders will be learning how to create a 3 dimensional sculpture of a bird from a 2 dimensional painting. 5th graders will be deciding on an individual theme for a race car design and will enter their design into the Dover Downs annual Pace Car Design Contest. Encourage your student to put forth their best effort on this project! We’d love to have a Fred student have their design turned into the official pace car for Dover Downs International Speedway! 5th grade is currently learning about the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. We are using my homemade play dough to sculpt sugar skulls. Many 5th graders are wondering how to make this dough at home. Below is the recipe. BE ADVISED THAT AN ADULT SHOULD BE PRESENT WHILE MAKING THIS DOUGH!!!!
2 cups baking soda 1 cup corn starch 1.5 cups cold water Combine all ingredients in a pot on the stove and cook on medium-high heat until the mixture thickens to the point where it is the consistency of mashed potatoes. You will need to stir the mixture almost the entire time you're cooking it so that it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pot. Remove dough from stove and carefully dump it into a bowl. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth while the dough cools. Once the dough is cool, transfer to an air tight container and ENJOY :) |
